The 45# carbon steel pipe features a carbon content of approximately 0.45%, along with minimal manganese and silicon, making it a premium carbon structural steel with low sulfur and phosphorus. According to GB/T14975-2002, it can be processed through hot-rolling or cold-drawing, and it is recommended to undergo heat treatment at specific temperatures: normalizing at 850°C, quenching at 840°C, and tempering at 600°C.
Known for its low hardness and excellent machinability, 45# steel is ideal for applications in molds, including templates, pins, and guide posts, though heat treatment is essential. Post-quenching hardness can exceed HRC55, reaching up to HRC62 before tempering, with practical applications generally capping at HRC55 (high-frequency quenching yields HRC58).
Avoid carburizing and quenching processes, as they can lead to hard and brittle martensite, negating the benefits of heat treatment. After proper quenching and tempering, 45# steel exhibits strong mechanical properties, making it suitable for critical structural components like connecting rods, bolts, gears, and shafts that endure alternating loads. For enhanced surface hardness, consider tempering combined with surface quenching.
Carburizing is recommended for heavy-duty components requiring a wear-resistant surface and an impact-resistant core. This process increases surface carbon content to 0.8–1.2%, achieving high hardness (HRC58–62) while maintaining a lower hardness core for toughness. However, ensure the core carbon content is carefully managed to avoid brittleness.
